Under general supervision, performs general duty police work to enforce the law, preserve public safety and order, and apprehend offenders. Police Officers are employed at three distinct levels: Police Officer - Recruit, Police Officer - Academy Graduate, and Police Officer - Advanced Entry. Duties include patrolling designated areas, responding to calls for police assistance or investigation, establishing and maintaining control of persons and traffic at scenes, providing protection of life and property, conducting preliminary investigations, gathering evidence, taking statements, issuing citations, making arrests, preparing written reports, appearing in court as a witness or arresting officer, and presenting oral presentations to schools, community groups, and the public. Knowledge required includes principles and practices of modern police work, laws governing arrest and custody, patrol procedures, criminal investigation techniques, court rules, and radio procedures. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, have a valid Washington State Driver's License, and successfully complete polygraph, psychological exams, and background checks. Physical and health standards must be met and maintained. Ability to possess a firearm is required. Conviction of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence may disqualify candidates. The position is represented by the Police Guild union.
